Today we also visited the Basilica of Aquileia, a beautiful church with a stunning mosaic floor and a gorgeous crypt full of frescoes. Some parts of the structure date back to 313 CE!
This had been on my bucket list for a while - absolutely recommended!

FLOOR MOSAIC, C. 315-320 СЕ. S. MARIA ASSUNTA, AQUILEIA In 1909-1912, archaeologists removed the later pavement of the multilayered basilica that had once been the cathedral church of Aquileia and seat of the patriarchate that was later moved to Venice. They discovered the original floor, which at 760 square metres is the largest palaeochristian mosaic in the world. Its complex iconographic scheme includes four roundels with figures representing the seasons, two of which, Summer (seen here) and Autumn still survive intact. This pavement, built by order of Bishop Theodosius just after the Edict of Toleration was issued in Milan in 313 CE, is still recognisably classical and Roman rather than Byzantine, though Constantine himself certainly contributed to the cost of making it. The figures are defined by light and shadow. The bust of Summer, on a white background, is clad in a green tunic with golden decoration, and her face is inquisitive and kind. She's framed in an interlocking circle of yellow-orange tuning forks alternating with grey-blue ones. This is peak mosaic work.
