John Nelson Darby (1800–1882) was an Anglo-Irish Plymouth Brethren leader who popularized the pre-tribulation rapture theory in the 1830s. He proposed a two-stage return of Christ: a secret "rapture" of believers before a seven-year tribulation, followed by a public return. This became a core tenet of modern Dispensationalism.
