Professor Gerhard Paulus (Friedrich Schiller University, Jena, Germany) “XUV coherence tomography: Non-invasive, nano-scale cross-sectional imaging with high harmonics” 3pm London time Friday 06th December 2024 on Zoom
I will discuss cross-sectional nanoscale imaging in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectral region using high-harmonics produced by femtosecond laser radiation. The imaging technique is particularly easy to understand in the time domain: An attosecond pulse incident on a sample is reflected in the internal structures of the sample. As a consequence, a series of attosecond pulse replicas is generated. The delay between these pulse replicas is on the order of 100 to a few 100 attoseconds, corresponding to structures on the order of 10s to 100s nanometers. Naturally, the pulse replicas differ in spectral amplitude and phase, depending on which and how much material they have propagated. In any case, their spectral interference can be measured by an XUV spectrometer and used to reconstruct the internal structure of the sample. In fact, it is possible to retrieve the phase of the XUV radiation reflected by the sample. Accordingly, the field of the train of pulse replicas is known. A particularly relevant application of XCT for the spectral range up to 100 eV are silicon-based samples. We have demonstrated depth resolutions of 20 nm and very high sensitivities. Buried oxide layers of a thickness of a few nanometers could be detected as well as buried monolayers of graphene. Thanks to the ability to reconstruct the field, it is even possible to identify the material encapsulated in silicon and to determine also properties like layer roughness without destroying the sample. A unique perspective is ultrafast imaging.
Professor Gerhard Paulus is the Chair of Nonlinear Optics at the Friedrich Schiller University, Jena, Germany. He graduated in 1992 from the Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich, Germany, where he also completed his PhD in 1995 under the supervision of Professor Herbert Walther. From 1995 to 2003, he was a research associate at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, Germany, where he also did his habilitation in 2002. From 2003 to 2007, he was an associate professor at the Texas A&M University, College Station, Tx, USA. Since 2007, he is a full professor at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany. He was also the head of the Atomic Physics Division of the German Physical Society (2018 – 2020), and the dean of the dean of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of Friedrich Schiller University (2013 – 2017). 2013 – 2017. He won the best Practice Award of the competition MINTdigital of the Stifterverband (2020), and several other teaching awards from the university and the student council. He is a Batsheva de Rothschild Fellow of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities (2019) and has a Honorary doctorate from the University of Sofia St. Kliment Ohridski, Bulgaria (2018). His contributions to strong-field and attosecond science include the discovery, proposal and the correct explanation of the above-threshold ionization plateau in the 1990s, photoionization with few-cycle laser pulses, non-invasive cross-sectional imaging with nano-scale resolution, and the combination of X-ray spectroscopy with high-definition polarimetry in a novel experimental technique that gives access to the electronic structure of condensed matter. Finally, for several years, he has felt compelled to take a stand against right-wing extremism by organizing the Klang der Stolpersteine (https://klang-der-stolpersteine.de), some 50 concerts at all the Stolpersteine in Jena commemorating victims of the Nazi terror.
The last #AttoFridays seminar of 2024 will take place this Friday at 3pm London time, online. Our speaker will be Professor Gerhard Paulus (Friedrich Schiller University, Jena, Germany).
