Fair! I’m all in on #BanAds, so I’d share the complaint that this is p much ubiquitous. Discord comes to mind I guess, but they’re… atypical? Otherwise not sure I can think of many.
Hacker News is entirely funded for YCombinator corporate propaganda purposes, which is a fun exception!
I totally agree — #BanAds — but it’s still a fatal flaw in a link-sharing social media site (or a newsletter, for that matter). Until we get a popular protocol going for journalism revenue sharing, the chance that any particular reader subscribes to any particular source is low.
I don't think there's any way to hold this position without calling for ads altogether to be banned -- this is just making the quiet part obvious, that we are offering something of ourselves by looking at ads, even if we're 'reasonable' and 'never buy things from ads'.
