#OnThisDay 1911 Rhymney Railway signalman William Parry fell & sprained his arm at #Bargoed, #Glamorgan, #Wales.

So what then for William?
So far as work was concerned, he carried on as signalman at least until 1939.
By 1911 he was living at 3 Railway Terrace, #Bargoed - his parents & siblings were at 1 Railway Terrace, so he hadn't gone far!

The record shows that William's leg was amputated following the accident at #Bargoed.
He received 11/- compensation per week (around £71 now) from the Rhymney Railway Company, until he resumed work on 2 November 1908.

Frustratingly it doesn't look like we have the company record of the accident.
However, we DO have Union record that relates to William's major accident - he was a member of the ASRS union (now @rmtunion.bsky.social) #Bargoed branch.
He was shown as a platelayer.

On 12 June 1907, William & his father, Thomas, were at #Bargoed station.
At about 5.30pm they were crossing the lines.
A coal train had just passed through - but as it did every night, it was then scheduled to back into a siding.

The incident itself is outwardly fairly minor & fairly typical. It's the detail that's included which points to a different story ...

William was living at home in 1901 - at 1 Railway Terrace, #Bargoed.
You couldn't get much more railway ... but William & his family did!
Both William & younger brother Thomas were listed on the 1901 Census as railway porters.
