Swakopmund beaches temporarily closed for maintenance work Niël Terblanché The Municipal Council of Swakopmund announced the temporary closure of two popular beaches to allow urgent maintenance and coastal protection works while colder weather prevails. The municipality’s spokesperson, Linda Mupupa, said the beach closures form part of broader coastal management efforts to address increasing erosion caused by high seas and wave action. She said access to the affected beaches north of the Jetty along Molenweg in the Central Business District, as well as the general beach area near the public parking at Mile 4, will be restricted until at least 30 May. “At the CBD beach north of the Jetty, the existing breakwater will be reinforced to help protect the surrounding infrastructure and coastline from further damage,” she explained. She added that at Mile 4, rock belts will be placed strategically around the beach area near the parking zone to mitigate the ongoing erosion issues in that area. Residents and visitors are advised that both locations will have heavy machinery and personnel present throughout the maintenance period, and beachgoers are urged to observe safety instructions and respect the restricted areas. “We urge all residents and visitors to exercise caution when in or near these zones during this time,” she said. She expressed appreciation to the public for their patience and cooperation as the necessary works are carried out on behalf of the council. Mupupa added that the measures aim to ensure long-term access and safety at Swakopmund’s beaches, which are key recreational and tourism assets for the town.
