New "Calexit" bid for California secession approved for signature gathering in effort to put measure on ballot A new bid to place a measure on the ballot that would ask California voters to approve the state's secession from the U.S. has been cleared for signature gathering.

This 2028 ballot measure will not be true secession from the federal republic, though it would ask:

"Should California leave the United States and become a free and independent country?"
