Beggiatoa mats on the bottom of a Dutch lake forming white mats In a bit more detail.
Two photos of the same jar. A bit of sediment and the white hue is Beggiatoa. A few hours after taken the left photo, you see the change of that white hue. These Beggiatoa bacteria are motile and thus move around.
Marine species can also have freshwater cousins.
Just an idea of what these mats look like on the bottom. These are #freshwater ones. It's a useful indicator of anoxic or low oxygen conditions.
