I had an idea while watching #Paleostream for a thermal image of speculative thermogenesis (heat production) in a #bennettitalean cone, so I quickly painted it! It's just an idea, but I'd like to explore its potential more!

A plant centred in a portrait picture. the plant has a thick undulating stem, with three undulations on the left hand branch, which extends up at about a 45 degree angle. The final undulation, and the apex of the branch, bares a narrow egg-shaped cone which has spiked bracts with bright coloured tips. the cone is surrounded by a cluster of 6 long feather-like or palm tree like fronds which have narrow pointed leaflets which would have been prickly to touch. On the second to last undulation is a spherical cone surrounded by the remains of a few withered bracts.
Here's my restoration of #Kimuriella densifolia, an incredibly well preserved whole plant #bennettitalean from the Late #Jurassic of Japan, which bore #Williamsonia and #Weltrichia 'floral organs' and #Zamites leaves. #paleobotany #paleoart #FossilFriday #paleontology #plants
