“Do you want to talk about it?” Bertholdt asked, and Reiner shook his head, not sure he was truly ready yet, and he also didn’t see how talking about things with Bertholdt would change anything in his mother’s perspective. Instead he did the only thing he could think of. The thing he wished he could have done all those months ago. “I’m sorry, Bertholdt.” “For what, Reiner?” Bertholdt genuinely sounded confused. _For breaking your heart._ “For ruining your date night. Again…” For a moment there was silence, then Bertholdt chuckled. “Don’t worry about it. Jean will come around soon enough. Besides, the night isn’t over.”

Chapter Text Reiner had no concept of time when he woke up. Still tucked up against the door, his joints screamed as he slowly unfolded himself. For a good while, he sat, back against the door, legs stretched out in front of him, and stared into thin air. His head was empty, and for once, he found a little comfort in it, too exhausted to want any thoughts to ruin the brief moment of peace. But much to his disappointment, it didn’t last long. Jean’s words, Eren’s actions, and the remains of his breakdown slowly stirred the calm surface, refusing to leave him alone. With a deep sigh, he got to his feet and his bladder chose that moment to remind him of its existence, adding to the building stress in his body. At least, going to the toilet was an automated task, one that didn’t require much thought because thinking was the last thing he was capable of at that moment.
