My thoughts on the #betterposter design: I now like it. Yes, it does cost a lot of space to put a huge callout, but it is easy to get the main takeouts of the study, which is what most people read anyway. I also weirdly love how it forces me to only put key points in it. Nobody scans the QR code.

Stop Making Bad Research Posters (opinion) New research suggests a better way.

I am reliant on using templates out of accessibility needs so I have not employed the #betterposter design. The linked piece below argues for Complete Sentence Design instead.

What do you all use?

Doctors Without Borders goes #betterposter! 🥳

Our #ScienceUX community created an evidence-based poster template to improve science communication at the MSF Pediatric conference this year.

Big believer that posters are better than talks at conferences. After presentating my first #BetterPoster at #ESA2025, that has only been reinforced.

How do scientists browse scientific posters? We can measure it! YouTube video by Mike Morrison, PhD

If we want to improve scientific poster sessions, we have to get good at measuring them.

So I went to Europe's largest liver science conference and attempted to measure how scientists browse posters.

Findings soon. Watch the walkthrough:

Nearly exploded Google Docs with 120 simultaneous people playing presentation slide & poster design games.

After 5 years, still my favorite group!

We have a hideously-ugly 3D printed prototype! 🎉

Major update on our quest to create an #OpenHardware people counter to measure & improve how scientists forage for information in poster sessions.

Prettier, better device to follow. All designs/code on GitHub.

Maybe interesting on this topic is this vid by Mike Morrison, who is advocating for a design called #betterposter: www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYk2...

My primary goal with #betterposter is to help you learn something from every poster (instead of only 3/100), even though you only spend 4-7 seconds with most posters.

What one thing do you want most people to learn? You can do anything with your 4 seconds except clickbait them.

Which then comes to what I think is the fundamental reason people struggle with #betterposter - do you navigate the reader to conclusions before anything else? That's just now how we do science... We build to the conclusion...

Making statements with section headings on your conference poster A new paper by Wolfe and colleagues (in press) provide a new suggestion for improving your poster. Do not use generic section headings like...

🆕 Research suggests a conference poster format that outperforms BOTH the "journal article on a wall" and #betterposter formats.

The “Complete assertion headings” poster format!

🤔

Yeah, they should have workshopped the name a little more.

Just ran one of my favourite workshops in our research education & development program (it has lots of memes, which may or may not have to do with its favourite status) on conferencing - always give a shout out to #betterposter in it & was happy to find @mikemorrison.bsky.social is here on Bluesky!

OSF was a lifesaver for me (hosted #betterposter templates through 250k downloads with zero issues), so on functionality alone I still love it. But UX-wise, this might be an interesting redesign project for the #scienceUX reddit community...

The #BetterPoster approach is the only system of poster design that I've seen that:
- you can use with no design experience
- you can teach others to use with relatively consistent results
- produces a coherent poster in the majority of cases
