We’d love one around #ptbo #bikeptbo too. I bet it would handle light snow as well.

“It’s just so beautiful”: Peterborough’s first bicycle-priority street a hit with cyclists BRETT THROOP from Peterborough Currents. Originally published 2023-06-28 Bethune Street from McDonnel to Townsend has been rebuilt with cyclists in mind and car traffic is now restricted on it. http...

#bikeptbo and #ptbo are lucky to have the Bethune St bikeway. It’s a gem of active transportation architecture.

It needs some love.

Last night we repositioned 15 of the planter boxes back to the middle of the road. Today at 3pm we are “planting” pine and birch boughs for winter. Join us!

Bethune Street Bicycle Boulevard (Peterborough, ON - May 2024)
Bethune Street Bicycle Boulevard (Peterborough, ON - May 2024) A bicycle ride in the Bethune Street bicycle boulevard in Peterborough, ON (May 2024). Highlights include traffic diverters, traffic calming, bicycle signal lights, new trees, benches, sidewalk updates, connections to two multi-use pathways and a 30 km/h speed limit. Our ride begins by heading Northbound from the intersection of Bethune Street and Townsend Street. Right away we see a traffic diverter, a new bench, sidewalk upgrades and several new trees. As we approach the other end of the block we see another traffic diverter making this a walking and rolling zone. Following this, we cross Wolfe Street and enter a section of Bethune Street that is shared with cars. However the lanes are narrow, winding and have a 30 km/h speed limit. As the ride continues we can see additional sidewalk updates, new trees and benches. As we approach Charlotte Street we see bicycle signal lights, two more traffic diverters, sidewalk updates and benches. As we get closer to Simcoe & Bethune Park we see another traffic diverter, picnic tables, benches and more new trees. The lanes are also narrow and wind around to Hunter Street. At the intersection with Brock Street there are more traffic diverters, benches and a connection to the Trans-Canada Trail. Following this, we ride to the end of the bicycle boulevard at the intersection with McDonnel Street. Since the Masterplan shows the next two blocks being part of the bicycle boulevard (possible delay due to construction?) we'll ride a little further to the second pathway connection being the Rotary Greenway Trail. Length of bicycle boulevard: 1.4 km (as of May 2024) Additional distance to Rotary Trail: 225 m Construction completed in September, 2023. This week's video shows one of the best bicycle boulevards we have filmed so far. Bethune Street in Peterborough, Ontario includes traffic diverters and traffic calming to provide a low speed, low stress experience.
