[text from map] The biofiltration pond before you is the first in a series of management strategies developed to improve the water quality. Urban activities within the watershed produce various pollutants that may be washed from cultivated landscapes, lawns, and paved surfaces into our receiving waters. These include but are not limited to fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides from landscapes, sediments from construction sites, fuels and coolants, metals from brake pads, tire wear from vehicles, bacteria from pet waste, trash and debris. If left unchecked all these pollutants could accumulate in Deer Lake. The pond is designed to slow the flow of water entering from Beaver Creek and to prolong the holding-period of runoff water. This promotes settling of solids, and allows biophysical processes such as the uptake of pollutants by plants, to degrade and capture pollutants. Contaminated sediments may then be removed from sections of the pond and disposed of in a safe manner. In addition, the bio filtration pond serves to attract a variety of birds, reptiles and amphibians.
The best measure to protect our aquatic ecosystem is to keep pollutants from entering stormwater.
