Mealy amazon, Tortuguero, CR 🇨🇷
Didn’t get many close views of this parrot species, but pleased when one was more interested in a having a low canopy meal than avoiding me. By the national park entrance, 3.2.2026 #birds #birdingcostarica

Black-cheeked woodpecker, Tortuguero, Costa Rica, in the rain. Four on the same tree, whilst I was busy photographing slaty-backed trogon in the village of San Francisco de Tortuguero. Vast nature reserve only accessible by boat. #birdingcostarica 🇨🇷 #birds

Slaty-tailed trogon, Tortuguero, Costa Rica. Two hour boat/hike in torrential rain up to Cerro Tortuguero, four of these beauties fighting with kiskadee back at the launch! #birdingcostarica #birds

A Great Kiskadee (small bird) attacks a Yellow-headed Caracara (a large predator bird) in Costa Rica, probably to protect its nest.

Little can take on big with enough guts and determination. Great Kiskadee has Yellow-headed Caracara backing off. A good lesson for our times? 🪶

Did well for Antpittas in Costa Rica, a quintessentially neotropical family. Surprisingly, Streak-chested Antpitta came bounding in to a whistled imitation of its song but more typically Thicket Antpitta made us work a lot harder! #BirdingCostaRica

A day with two Tinamous is a good day. Pictured here, a relatively showy Great Tinamou and much more shy Slaty-breasted Tinamou, in La Selva. #BirdingCostaRica

Been up near the Nicaraguan border today for the eponymous Seed-finch and Grackle. The bill on the finch could give a Hawfinch a good battle! #BirdingCostaRica

Had cracking views of the rarely seen Lanceolated Monklet this morning at Arenal. Meant all the more after missing it on multiple previous trips to the neotropics. #BirdingCostaRica

Bare-shanked Screech-owl and Black-and-white Owl from a spot of nocturnal birding lately, the monochrome miscreant loitering outside my room, eating moths and bats all night. #BirdingCostaRica

Local knowledge was very useful for seeing owl roosts which included Pacific Screech-owl and the huge Spectacled Owls. #BirdingCostaRica
