🌎 Black-necked swan (Cygnus melancoryphus) The black-necked swan is a striking waterfowl with a pure white body contrasting sharply with its black neck and head. Adults sport a grey bill with a prominent red knob at the base and a white stripe behind the eye. Juveniles are greyish and lack the red knob. Native to South America, they are found in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and southern Brazil, also residing in the Falkland Islands. They inhabit freshwater marshes, lagoons, and lakes. These swans are social outside breeding season but become territorial. Black-necked swans are primarily vegetarian, feeding on aquatic plants. Their calls are soft, repeated whistles. Cygnets are often seen riding on their parents' backs. No subspecies are recognised.
