A micrograph of a blood smear from a Bald Eagle at 1000x magnification. There are scattered avian red blood cells which are oval with darker oval nucleus in the center. At the 10 o'clock position there is a red blood cell without a nucleus, the erythroplastid. At 11 and 2 o'clock are large, round, white blood cells with ovoid pink granules, called heterophils. The thrombocyte is at the 6 o'clock position just to the left of a larger, more purple immature red blood cell.

Here's blood from a Bald Eagle that has a red blood cell without a nucleus, called an erythroplastid, and low numbers are normal (this is the only one I saw). The darker purple ovals are immature red blood cells. Two heterophils and a thrombocyte are also present. #bloodsmear #baldeagle #science

A cell phone photo of a Virginia opossum blood smear. Centrally there is one monocyte with a doughnut shaped nucleus. There are also 3 lymphocytes and 6 neutrophils, along with red blood cells and thrombocytes.

I can't stop myself taking photos of blood. Virginia opossum monocytes--often very weird. This one has a doughnut-shaped nucleus, which I see in this species but have no idea if it's normal. They do seem to have some normal anisocytosis of RBCs. #bloodsmear #40x #wildliferehabilitation #science
