Japanese #alternatehistory in #boardwargame format: The militarist fascists never take over and Japan and the U.S. end up becoming allies against the Nazis in World War III. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/14...
The campaign culminated in the Battle of Wagram, Napoleon's last true triumph. Kevin Zucker's 1984 #boardwargame, via Victory Games: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/37...
This reminds me that I really need to start posting about my #boardwargame collection again. I'm several months behind on updates on that topic.
I have the Free League edition (which includes not only Poland but Sweden, logically enough since Free League is a Swedish outfit). @nopipbutcpip.bsky.social and I have noodled around with a Grand Unified #boardwargame and #ttrpg super-campaign from SPI's "The East is Red" to "Twilight 2000".
Mack once did a very funny, and very accurate, installment where he visited the offices of Simulations Publications, Inc. ("SPI"), at that time (the late 1970's) one of the leading #boardwargame publishers, quotes lifted directly from various ongoing playtesting sessions.
Setting up for playtest match 2 of the forthcoming #boardwargame "Romania 1916", dealing with the disastrous (for them) entry of that nation into World War I. @nopipbutcpip.bsky.social takes the Entente (Romania & Russia) today and I have the Central Powers (A-H, GE, BU & TU).
This particular incident, Operation Bøllebank (which translates as "Bully Bashing"), is the subject of a #boardwargame designed by @6xwa.bsky.social : boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/41...
The #boardwargame publisher Simulations Publications, Inc. ("SPI") re-branded one of its wargames - "Bastogne", from the "Westwall" package of 1944-45 Western Front games - with the movie's title and released it in a fancy package. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/42...
"It is fun to find treasure".
I am trying very hard right now to restrain myself from, for the 20-somethingith time, launching into the tale of how, two years ago now, I found one of the rarest of all #boardwargame series complete, near-mint, on a random Friday-evening visit...
I don't know of any novel in which Hitler didn't attack Russia (it was fundamental to his ideology/worldview that Russia had to be conquered and converted into Lebensraum), but there is at least one #boardwargame in which not only did the U.S. not go to war with Nazi Germany...
...at least IMO as to why GMT is considered by many the leading publisher in the historical boardgaming hobby. (They started P500 after a legendary fiasco where they published a SF tactical #boardwargame that turned out to be a colossal flop; unfortunately I forget the title).
New year, new #boardwargame playtest season. Received the email from Decision Games at lunchtime with the first list of games to put through the wringer.
Actually, I believe there is an objective definition of "bad" in game design, which basically equals "is unplayable as designed". Relevant example: several years ago, I and @nopipbutcpip.bsky.social playtested a #boardwargame for Decision Games, ostensibly supposed to reproduce...
...which *hasn't* had the cardboard backing come loose due to the deterioration of the glue, and most of the clear plastic covers have experienced wear and tear of some sort over the last half-century. (I have somewhere between 80 to 100 SPI games in my own #boardwargame collection...
Change just a few words and this thread can be well-applied to #boardwargame collecting as well. My wargame collection currently has some 450-460 games (counting individual items in multi-game collections such as SPI's "quadrigames", many of which were sold as separate items...)
One of the problems in designing a #boardwargame on the 1940 campaign is that any competent Allied player will know this history, and will deploy their forces as much as possible to provide a substantial reserve with which to intercept any German attack through the Ardennes.
If there's any upside to the new national security strategy document from the Administration, it's that I, as a board wargamer, can think up a plausible "EU intervenes to restore constitutional liberty in America" scenario for SPI's classic #boardwargame "Invasion: America" & MB's "Fortress America"

This upcoming #boardwargame from @gmtgames.bsky.social covers the initial campaign for control of Kyiv and its environs in early 2022. D.B. Dockter is designer of "Triumph of Chaos" (Clash of Arms), on the Russian Civil War.
I wonder if I should do the same with my #boardwargame collection. I certainly have a large enough library - something like 450, in fact - to last the standard calendar year.
The manual for the notorious #boardwargame “Campaign for North Africa” isn’t nearly as labyrinthine. I know this because I own a copy, pasta-water rule and all.

According to the article, this seems to be the largest-scale #boardwargame yet produced by a Chinese wargame publisher, from the picture of the maps laid out, it well merits the term "monster game". It does seem to have its shortcomings however, from the article, it seems to be nearly as complex...
This SPI #boardwargame, which I added to my collection several months past, is at pretty much the same scale (company-level) as Highway to the Reich: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/58...
The set includes a battle between Chandragupta - a younger contemporary of Alexander’s who once met him but ended up fleeing his wrath after offending him - & Seleceus Nicator, one of the Diadochi. #gboh #boardwargame #alexanderthegreat #chandragupta #ashoka
I think it was legendary #boardwargame designer and military scholar/analyst James F. Dunnigan who pointed out in his book "How To Make War" (1981) that armed forces that overemphasize grooming and fancy uniforms tend to be pretty poor performers in actual warfighting.
Two copies of the 1979 SPI wargame/RPG Commando. The more expensive copy is seemingly in worse shape.
This made me chuckle. I found two copies of SPI’s Commando in my friendly local used-media shop. What’s funny is that the more expensive one has the worse-condition box. #boardwargame #ttrpg
It's hard to think of anything more niche than a doujin of a Japanese #alternatehistory (which is already pretty niche) #boardwargame which is very rare, and VERY expensive, on this side of the Pacific, but I'm looking hard at this one on eBay: www.ebay.com/itm/13476198...
The #boardwargame I won't lend out under any circumstances, nosireebob, is my nearly-unpunched copy of the Red Sun Black Cross trilogy. Those beauties can run for up to $1000 as a group.
My own personal favorite #Tolkien illustrators in my youth were David Day (The Tolkien Bestiary) and Tim Kirk, who did the character illustrations for #SPI 's "War of the Ring" #boardwargame. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/22...
