Illustration of little black cat running beneath a full moon beside a tree and a bat in flight.

The Moon
THe moon has a face like the clock in the hall;
She shines on thieves on the garden wall, On streets and fields and harbour quays, And birdies asleep in the forks of the trees.
The squalling cat and the squeaking mouse, The howling dog by the door of the house, The bat that lies in bed at noon,
All love to be out by the light of the moon.
But all of the things that belong to the day Cuddle to sleep to be out of her way;
And flowers and children close their eyes Till up in the morning the sun shall arise.

The chilling folklore of Black Shuck, East Anglia’s legendary spectral hound! Massive black dog with fiery red or green eyes roams Norfolk & Suffolk roads. Sixteenth-century omen of death. In 1577 Bungay church, it burst in, killed 2, left scorch marks still visible.

A book cover for Watership Down shows a large, detailed illustration of a rabbit’s head in profile, its fur rendered in soft earthy tones of brown, gold, and green. The rabbit’s eye is prominent and reflective, giving it an alert, thoughtful expression.

Behind it, a gently rolling countryside stretches across the background, drawn in light blues and greens. Sparse trees dot the hills, and two smaller rabbits are shown running across the landscape in the distance.

At the top, the text reads “40th Anniversary Edition” and the title Watership Down, while the author’s name, Richard Adams, appears below. The overall style is delicate and pastoral, evoking nature and quiet movement.

A richly illustrated book cover shows several anthropomorphic animals dressed in Edwardian-style clothing gathered outside a grand house. At the top, an ornate golden frame surrounds the title The Wind in the Willows.

On the steps, a well-dressed toad in a bright waistcoat and jacket stands in the doorway, holding a hat and striking a confident pose. In front of him, three other animals face the steps: a badger in a long coat with hands clasped behind his back, a small mole in a blue coat standing attentively, and a rat in a dark suit looking downward.

The house behind them features tall windows and brick walls, with large potted plants flanking the entrance. The scene has a classic, storybook quality, evoking a polite but slightly tense social moment among the characters.

A black-and-white illustration shows a small group gathered inside a hollow, cave-like shelter. On the right, a young man lies on the ground, slightly propped up, looking up as Trufflehunter, a large badger, leans over him with a calm, attentive expression, as if checking on his condition.

To the left, two dwarfs sit near a small fire—one quiet and focused downward, the other wearing a hat and gesturing as if speaking. The rough, earthen interior has small objects like cups or tools tucked into the walls.

Trufflehunter was an old talking badger who lived during the time of the War of Deliverance, and who later served Caspian X during his time as king of Narnia. He was also the first talking beast of Narnia that Caspian had ever met.

How Sir Walter Scott made the Dandie Dinmont terrier a legend This week marked Sir Walter Scott’s birthday — and so it seemed the right moment to celebrate the terrier that owes its fame, and its name, to his pen.

Dandie Dinmont terriers are named after a character in Walter Scott’s GUY MANNERING. Scott was a committed dog-lover: his favourite, a Pyrenean Wolfdog/Highland Deerhound cross named Maida, has his own memorial at the entrance to Abbotsford
