#BootsTheory in action.
One of my sons is looking for work. He has been advised to make himself more employable, he needs to get unpaid work experience. He has a placement set up, for which i just paid £71 in safety boots, dark cargo pants and polo tops (required workwear).

Read about #BootsTheory. Join a union. Do not vote right-wing. Buy yourself good boots. Do not accept that your feet are wet or cold [or hurting or that you are unable to run, because "fashion" dictates high heels].
Men at Arms by Terry Pratchett
Book 21 was Men at Arms by Terry Pratchett.
Plot-wise, this isn’t my favourite Discworld book but it’s got some absolute belters. For example, the Sam Vimes theory of socioeconomic unfairness originates in this book.

The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. ... A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. ... But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socio-economic unfairness. From "Men At Arms" by Terry Pratchett
It's always relevant to post "The Boots Theory". The current complaints about the high price of butter are a symptom of the overall economic pain people are feeling. When you have to toss up buying 1 toilet roll at a time vs a bulk pack (which would be much cheaper), it matters a lot. #BootsTheory
“Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socio-economic unfairness.” From Terry Prachett’s 1993 novel “Men at Arms” from the “Discworld” series.

...upon four elephants where the elephants in turn stood upon a giant turtle. So I guess this technically counts as #TodayILearned, too?
Anyways. #BootsTheory. #SocioEconomicUnfairness.
UK: Rooftop solar panels could cut energy bills by 24% (Photo of house in the woods with rooftop solar panelling) A Resolution Foundation report, has called for means-tested grants or loans to cover the upfront costs that prevent poorer households from benefiting from solar energy. A 3kW solar panel — which could save as much as £440 a year — costs about £6,500. This is unaffordable for most low-income households. Meaning, those who stand to benefit most from lower energy bills are prevented from getting panels installed. Just 8% of UK households have solar panels, but a change of policy could lift 1.2 million people out of fuel poverty.
☀️ The cost of buying and installing #SolarPanels makes them out of reach to the people who would benefit the most. Assisting with those costs is a #GreenPolicy that would make a significant difference for many families.

Yes, but it's not just stress.
Can't afford to clean your teeth or have a cavity filled?
Enjoy the resulting heart disease later in life.
Can't afford to have a posture correct place to sleep?
Back problems are in your future.
Etc, etc, etc ...

Doing some Vimesing tonight and it hurts, but it's the good kind of hurt.
(Just got paid so I'm buying high value items that last long and things in bulk so it's cheaper in the long run)
