A locust borer on goldenrod. The beetle is at center in the photo, looking to the left and positioned diagonally on the goldenrod. The goldenrod has many wiry yellow flowers that the borer appears to be feeding on. Its antennae are long and pink and its legs are also pink. Starting with yellow at the tip of its head, the body and thorax alternate between black and yellow, The last black stripe at the top of the thorax has yellow dots on it. After the first two yellow stripes, the third one is a yellow W, which causes the alternating black to appear as upside down triangles. The next yellow line looks like a W, but with the W closed in the middle, causing the next black stripe to become thicker and curve downward. There are four more alternating yellow and black stripes. The yellow ones are thin and the black ones thick. They end at the tail with a very small yellow stripe.

Four colour photos looking straight on at a log from a poplar (Populus) tree that has lost its bark. The wood is crisscrossed with many squiggly tracks, some of which are bored into the wood, while others are tiny tunnels that have been built onto the wood. There are also "pinholes" where something has bored straight into the wood. The colours range from light grey through deep brown / black.

When trees die, before their bark falls away, the layer between bark and wood is a place of safety and a source of food for many beetle and their larva, ants, and other arthropods. Some make these interesting tunnels that become visible when the bark does fall off.
