A bird's-eye view down the centre of a staircase, spiralling down in an odd shape, almost like half a semi circle. 3 sides are straight, the fourth is curved. The stairs are carpeted in dusky red over wooden floors. The tops of the bannisters are a rich wood while the vertical railings are white, carved and elegant.

A great morning at #BucklandAbbey, #Devon. I prefer Cistercian houses to be functioning monasteries rather than homes to nobles, but since this monastery passed to Sir Francis Drake himself, I’ll make an exception.
It’s a fine set of buildings in a glorious landscape. Far from the concourse of men.
