A rustic wooden barn stands nestled among tall trees with lush green and yellow foliage. A long wooden flume or trough system runs horizontally across the foreground, bordering a paved path, while dappled sunlight filters through the canopy above.

This restored barn in Cades Cove helped settlers survive in the secluded Appalachian environment. No hardware stores, no online orders - just self-sufficiency.

Ordinary people leaving traces for us centuries later.

The water flume at Cades Cove Mill. Diverts water from Mill Creek, channels it down to the mill wheel for power. Simple engineering, but effective. Been doing the same job since 1868 (with restoration help from the WPA).

This grist mill in Cades Cove was built in 1868. Fell into disrepair, then restored by the WPA during the Great Depression. Park Service still maintains it today. Water-powered and still operational. Living history.
