A kinetic pair of vintage 1950s 60s handmade sterling silver black lacquer and pearl Bamboo & Caged Pearls design screwback earrings. Silver surmounts with black onyx cabochons bezel-set at fronts, and from which dangle sterling silver and black lacquer 'bamboo' design sections with a three dimensional spherical 'cage' holding a free-moving pearl inside. Lots of movement when worn! In Japan, bamboo symbolizes good luck, resilience, and flexibility, often used in New Year celebrations and other traditions. It represents the ability to bend without breaking, even in the face of adversity, and is associated with strength and the renewal of spring. Bamboo also plays a role in various aspects of Japanese life, from construction and crafts to cuisine and art.Exquisite craftsmanship with the sterling silver given a black lacquer coating that has been carved-thru to produce the highlights of the design. Each measures 1-1/2" tall by 1-3/8" wide, and the pair weigh 5.7 grams total. Marked "Sterling" at backs as shown, most likely the high grade Japanese 950 sterling silver. Excellent vintage condition.
