RELIEF OF A YOUNG RAM, C3-C4 CE. COURTYARD CHURCH, UMM AR-RASAS, JORDAN The fascinating site of Umm ar-Rasas in central Jordan includes a complex of four connected churches, probably a monastic centre, that may have been built in the C6 but was certainly decorated with magnificent mosaic floors in the late C8, by which point the territory was in Muslim hands but still hosted a thriving Christian community. The complex of St Stephen's, the monastic and pilgrimage centre, was built on the site of an earlier Roman building and reused its spolia, including this lovely relief of a young ram, from possibly as early as 250 CE. It is emerging from a circular frame of acanthus leaves and its carving is distinctly local. One ram's horn survives at the top and one of the two front legs of the animal is carved in the round. The wool of the ram's pelt has naturalistic tufts but the face is stylised. One wonders what the relief's original context was.
In an #exhibition about the dawn of #Christianity in #Jordan still at the #Cancelleria in #Rome for another few days is this #relief, ancient #spolia reused in the late C8 in a #church, showing a male #lamb with dense whorls of #wool and a startled expression. #ReliefWednesday #ClassicsBluesky 🏺

MOSAIC PANEL WITH ARAMAIC INSCRIPTION, 510-531 CE. MOUNT NEBO MUSEUM, JORDAN On Mount Nebo in modern Jordan, a number of Christian religious sites sprung up to commemorate the death of the Old Testament prophet Moses, who legend says knew he would see the Holy Land but not live to enter it, and indeed the view from the mountain stretches out toward the Mediterranean. In the decades preceding 531, a small church and monastery called "of Kayanos" were built on the northern slope of Mount Nebo, and excavated in 2984 and 1986. Two mosaic floors were found, one superimposed on the other. This mosaic in white tesserae on a red background comes from the lower, older mosaic. It is written in one of the oldest examples of Christian Aramaic, and says "The reader will remember the good works of our lord Gayyan the priest (or the son) of Casiseos, and the heirs who have made (or restored) the parts of (or the furnishings ...) " "Our lord Gayyan" refers to the abbot of the time, and "the heirs" probably refers to the monastic community.
#EpigraphyTuesday brings us back to the #exhibition of the traces of #EarlyChristianity in #Jordan, currently at the palazzo della #Cancelleria in #Rome, to see one of the oldest surviving examples of #Christian #Aramaic script.

MOSAIC FLOOR PANEL, 526 CE. MADABA ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM, JORDAN This four-colour stone mosaic panel comes from the ancient settlement of Nebo, near a tiny modern village called Khirbet al-Mukhayyat in Jordan, not far from the Israeli-occupied West Bank. During the early rule of the Roman empire in the east, Nebo was packed with churches and monasteries, though the town was abandoned by the C7. This panel comes from the church of St George, the legendary warrior saint of the east, but the floor explicitly expresses peace. At centre, a date palm with a horizontally striped trunk in alternating red and yellow is flanked by two gazelles. At right, in Greek, is the name of the benefactor, Saola, repeated at left in the local Aramaic Palestinian Christian dialect, which rather conveniently can be read in Arabic as "peace". This mosaic and several others are currently in an exhibition in Rome at the Cancelleria.
#MosaicMonday draws us, not unwillingly, into the #Cancelleria in #Rome to explore the remains of early #Christianity in ancient #Jordan, in a one-month state-sponsored exhibition for the #Jubilee. It's a great chance to see little-known #mosaic work from the time of #Justinian. #ClassicsBluesky 🏺
