The strain carries the NDM-1 gene, which allows the bacteria to produce an enzyme that can break down some of the strongest antibiotics available, such as #carbapenems, drugs often reserved as a last line of defense for serious infections.

These germs are known as carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE).

#Carbapenems are a powerful class of IV #antibiotics used to treat severe, #multidrug-resistant #infections. When #bacteria develop resistance to them, treatment options become dangerously limited.
