Cataleya is a Caster and Malcolm is a Lancer, since they're a Summoner and Dragoon in FFXIV.
Going off their other main jobs, Cat could be an Assassin (Ninja + Dancer) or Berserker (Warrior) and Mal could be an Archer (Bard) or Saber (Red Mage + Paladin).

I know people who've mispronounced Cataleya's first and last name before I assume it happens sometimes in-story. And similarly, Malcolm's first name is often spelled without the second l, so it ends up being Malcom.
As an all-rounder, Cataleya would use Summoner, Scholar, and Warrior. Malcolm doesn't have a healer job so his two-job role would be Dragoon/Paladin.

Cataleya is #4, lol. Malcolm is not #4, but he's also not any of the other three. He grew up in a fairly typical(?) Ishgardian noble household and became an adventurer as a way to get away from it, if only for a little while.

Cataleya and Malcolm have a daughter, Dahlia. She's born after the Dragonsong War and is still very little by the time her parents go to Tural. Also, in the 8th Umbral Calamity timeline, she survives and has a descendant who is part of Garlond Ironworks.

When I first made Cat and Mal in FFXIV, I picked starting classes that seemed the most fitting - Arcanist and Lancer, respectively - and in the long run the lore and vibes for their future jobs fit so well.
Summoner and Dragoon are what I mostly play, too.

Cataleya is of Turali descent on her mom's side and in the vague modern fantasy story idea I have her full name is Cataleya Mele Takahashi-Delatorre. So, mixed background and this aspect is one I rarely get to reference in fantasy AUs but FFXIV let it happen :3

Cataleya told her parents over a Linkpearl call post-ARR because she couldn't return to Sharlayan. They were worried. Mostly her dad.
Malcolm told his parents when he returned home in HW. It was a lot to accept, especially the fact he was at Carteneau too.

The title on Cat's adventure plate is "Shepherd to the Stars." I don't have it unlocked yet, but I really want "The Final Witness" on Mal's adventure plate... And both have GARO titles above their heads atm for PvP reasons, lol.

I went with what seemed like the best approximations of their DnD classes. Cat's a Wizard so I picked Arcanist. Mal's a Sorcerer/Warlock so you'd think I'd pick Thaumaturge but he fights with a spear so I picked Lancer. In the end, they were very fitting.

Mal avoided returning to Ishgard until after the Blood Banquet. Cat visited Old Sharlayan with Mal post-HW, and during HW she was thankful to see New Sharlayan again. HW was a time for homecomings.

Cat and Mal are bi, with Mal specifically being demi-bi. She has an easier time expressing her feelings while he tends to struggle. There's also the potential for ethical polyamory with them being each other's main partner, generally.
