Vote on the Central City in Motion Plan..
- @ChloeEudalyPDX - YES
- @AmandaFritzRN - YES
- @dansaltzman - YES
Boom. It's done. (yes it can pass w only 3 of 5 commissioners present)
#ccimpdx
"If it seems like we’re devoting a lot of time and money to biking and walking. We are, and it’s very necessary... We all own the streets." - @ChloeEudalyPDX swelling hearts among transpo activists still here in City Hall. #ccimpdx
Looks like vote might happen after all. One amendment from @AmandaFritzRN wd add language to "ensure freight access and loading zones for Cent East businesses." PBOT seems fine with that. Vote coming... #ccimpdx
Public testimony now over. Disc from @AmandaFritzRN who's concerned abt impacts on loading zones/parking in central east industrial district... she's worried prioritizing bikes there "industrial sanctuary" might turn it into the Pearl District, which she doesn't want. #ccimpdx
For some reason @CommishFish is no longer at the hearing and seems to be gone for good. That leaves only 3 commissioners present (Mayor also absent). That makes a vote today much less likely. #ccimpdx
"I don’t shop on NE Broadway bcuz it’s a terrifying street. If we made it less terrifying you’d get more business & you wouldn’t have to close." - Jessica E. @bikeloudpdx, who signed up to testify late so she could rebut some of the earlier testimony. pro move! #ccimpdx
After those NE biz owners spoke abt their concerns.. @PBOTinfo project manager went over to them and exchanged cards. That's a good move Gabe! #ccimpdx
Two biz owners - from Cotton Cloud Futons (NE 7th/Broadway) & Elephants Deli (SE 7th near Hawthorne) - say the projects will devastate their biz. Also NE Broadway Biz Association rep wants impact study done. Loss of lane space and parking is issue.
#ccimpdx
"Requesting NE/SE 7th be taken off list for a bike path & put on 6th Ave for safety concerns... 7th is freight route." - rep from PBOT Freight Cmte w concerns abt central eastside industrial district.
@ChloeEudalyPDX responds, "CEID is a FORMER industrial sanctuary."
#ccimpdx
"We're excited... We have 6,000 patients and 600 residents [at location along W Burnside]... That section of Burnside is important for us for safety and mobility. We urge you to move fwd w this plan." - rep for @CCCPortland, a major svc provider for homeless people. #ccimpdx
"Pent up demand for safe and efficient transpo alternatives mean that bold axns can lead to meaningful results… Today we can begin a new era of Pdx leadership in green, efficient transportation." - @Citizen_Cate
@bikeloudpdx, urging ASAP network buildout. #ccimpdx
"We strongly recommend moving all projects into the 1-5 year timeline." - transportation manager for @Portland_State
- Will @ChloeEudalyPDX put fwd a motion to do all projects within 1-5 years? That'd be wild. #ccimpdx
"We need to immediately implement a quick-build network w/ in 2 yrs as a proof of concept." - rep for @BetterBlockPDX (the folks who brought us #betternaito)
There's global precedent for this...do entire network on low budget to show impact ASAP. #ccimpdx
"We want all the projects built — not in 10 years — but in the first 1-5 years." -- Rithy Khut, chair of the PBOT Bicycle Advisory Committee.
#ccimpdx
"I'm here to cheer you on... [Biking] is already most effective way, if we can make it safest way, we can really increase mode share. " -- Mayor of Milwaukie (city south of Pdx) Mark Gamba who just won re-election with 95% of the vote and e-bikes everywhere.
#ccimpdx
... And as I alluded to upthread.. PBOT was ready for that question and explained why making Transit Mall carfree at this point is a non-starter. one big reason? property owners who paid to build Transit Mall were guaranteed "continuous vehicular access". #ccimpdx
-- But this plan is great answer to that concern. #ccimpdx
and will b ready to answer his concerns #ccimpdx
BTW if you're counting votes (and they actually vote today)... This plan is likely to pass. @CommishFish (a downtown resident & infrequent bike rider) @ChloeEudalyPDX (duh!) and @AmandaFritzRN (lots of walking/transit upgrades) shd all see huge upside to this plan. #ccimpdx
“Nobody will benefit if we add more cars to central city streets.” - caption on @PBOTinfo staff slide presentation #ccimpdx
transpo reformers must be pinching themselves at strong opening from @ChloeEudalyPDX... She urged a vote today because, "It's taken us 6 yrs to get to this point... we need to adopt this plan today to move fwd w/ any of them."
#ccimpdx
.@ChloeEudalyPDX laying gauntlet early... "I see very clearly... we need incentives/disincentives for ppl to change deeply engrained and to not drive their single occupancy vehicles." #ccimpdx
"Streets aren’t getting any wider and w any luck they’re not going to."
"I was stuck in traffic this morning on Hawthorne Bridge next to a bus... that felt like apropos experience given what we’re here to talk about today."
-- PBOT commish @ChloeEudalyPDX on #ccimpdx
Don't expect a #ccimpdx today. With an implementation plan & a separate, but related, parking mitigation plan on the agenda.. it's a lot of policy and commissioners are still learning about it. Today will be abt testimony & first impressions... test of political winds if u will.
Getting settled in for the @PBOTinfo Central City in Motion plan hearing at City Hall. Should be a long one! Here’s list of invited testimony... (thx @bikeloudpdx for the pic)
