4-3-26 Update on "Willie the Willapa Whale." Chinook Indian Nation Tribal members and friends searched for the juvenile gray whale in the North Fork of the Willapa River from the Monohon Landing Boat Launch paddling upriver past Camp 1 bridge in their traditional style canoe. Biologists from the Cascadia Research Collective and Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife used a small motorboat to search for the juvenile gray whale by going downriver to the downtown Raymond area and then back upriver past Camp 1 bridge. Fortunately, the juvenile gray whale seems to have decided it would rather go back to Willapa Bay and or the Pacific Ocean instead of staying another day in the upper tidal area of the Willapa River because no whales were found during the search coordinated by Pacific County Emergency Management Agency. If you see a whale where it normally should not be in Washington State, please call Cascadia Research Collective at 360-791-9555.
