Public Background: Hitoshi was born and raised in a rural, traditional town in Japan. Many of the townspeople say his kindness comes from his mother, who solely took care of him as his father was out of the picture. Their father’s absence did not stop them and their mother from creating a very close bond throughout his childhood. She owned a small restaurant in-town that Hitoshi hung out in often. The two bonded a lot over things like cooking and nature-walking through the mountain next to the town. While Mrs. Yamamoto acted as the sole parent of the household, the community was secondary to parental figures for Hitoshi. The adults and elders of the town were very involved in Hitoshi’s life as he grew up. The elders adored them, considering them as the town’s favorite. In return, he was very active in the community’s events and festivals, volunteering to help others with tasks and ceremonies. Their teenage years were really when Hitoshi began to question himself sexuality-wise and identity-wise. It wasn’t until he was nearly an adult that he began to express his gender through clothing. He traveled outside of the town to more urban areas by train sometimes, which gave him the perfect opportunity and freedom to dress however they wanted.
