The Torchbearer nodded, pulling up a chair to sit across from Clancy. Their knees were touching. He was warm, always warm like a fire. Clancy wouldn’t be surprised if he lit his torches by thought alone. But in his hands was that awful, cold thing, filled with darkness. It’s fine. It’s all fine. He won’t hurt me. Steeling himself, Clancy let his eyes flutter shut and held out his hands, palms up. One warm palm comes up to cradle the back of his hand, and slick fingertips drag themselves slowly over his palm. It’s cold, like he expected, but he suppresses a shiver. Torch’s touch was so gentle, and his hands were so much bigger than Clancy’s. He exhaled shakily through his teeth as the Torchbearer turned his hand over to paint the backside. His fingertips are starting to go numb. The first casualty from a smearing was always the feeling in his hands; fingers would start twitching by themselves soon, searching for electrical input and finding none. The Torchbearer moved to his other hand, leaving this one hovering strangely in the air. That’s right. Torch is here. It’s not like the other times, Clancy thought, fighting the immediate response of his brain to freeze in place, like he could just disappear if he was still enough. It’s not real. Manually, he monitored his breathing, in and out, to keep himself in the moment. He couldn’t drift off into what this normally felt like, what he used to do back in Dema, how it felt to have Nico’s hands around his throat. And he especially could not think about how it felt to be drowning in the darkness from his dream.
