cold winter is never endless
sunshine and blue river water
blooming cornelian flowers

BUST OF HADRIAN, 117-138 CE. MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI FIRENZE

This lovely and technically accomplished carnelian intaglio dates from Hadrian's lifetime and though it's somewhat idealised it might be a portrait from life. Hadrian is facing left and is wearing a laurel crown, not the only concession to his Graecophilia as we can also appreciate his beard. He was the first emperor to wear one, and he did it in conscious emulation of the Greek philosophers he so admired. However, his beard also served to conceal some truly terrible adolescent acne scars, or so it is said.

#ReliefWednesday brings us this stunning #cornelian #intaglio from the collection of the Grand Dukes of #Tuscany, now in #Florence's Archaeological Museum. Though the stone was cracked in antiquity, it maintains a magnificently detailed portrait of the #emperor #Hadrian.
