CVS second-quarter profit beats estimates, helped by medical cost oversight By Amina Niasse NEW YORK (Reuters) -CVS Health beat Wall Street estimates for second-quarter profit on Thursday, as tight oversight of higher medical costs led to improved performance for its Aetna health insurance business. The company also flagged improved performance in its national pharmacy chain and pharmacy benefit management businesses. Shares of the company rose more than 9% in premarket trading after the insurer raised its annual profit forecast. For full-year 2025, the insurer raised its profit outlook to $6.30 to $6.40 per share, compared with an average analyst estimate of $6.12 as compiled by LSEG. It attributed the raised forecast to its second-quarter performance. CVS previously had expected full-year earnings per share of $6.00 to $6.20. CVS Health (NYSE:CVS)’s Aetna insurance business reported a medical loss ratio, or the percentage of premiums spent on medical services, of about 89.9% in the second quarter. Analysts expected a ratio of 91.16%, according to LSEG estimates. It was the third quarter in a row that CVS beat earnings targets as the company works on a turnaround after having missed financial targets repeatedly last year. Those problems had stemmed from an unexpected sharp rise in medical costs in its Medicare Advantage plans for people aged 65 and older or with disabilities, and struggles with its pharmacies. "Nothing is a surprise to us this quarter," said CEO David Joyner in an interview with Reuters. Joyner, who joined the company last October, said the Aetna business experienced higher costs in its Medicare Advantage plans sold through groups such as employers or retiree organizations, but those costs were accurately anticipated. Aetna aims to reprice half of those plans for 2026, he added. CVS plans to close 250 brick-and-mortar pharmacies this year in an effort to cut costs, and the company is reducing its government-sponsored health insurance plans. Rivals including UnitedHealth (NYSE:UNH), Elevance and Centene (NYSE:CNC) have detailed higher-than-expected medical costs for the second quarter due to a sicker patient profile and mismatched government payment rates, primarily in Medicaid plans for low-income people. Government payment pressure in Medicare Advantage plans has also squeezed insurer margins this year, with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services changing its calculations of how to reimburse plans for their sickest members. Joyner said CVS’s primary care unit for seniors, Oak Street Health, is impacted by these regulatory changes, but the changes are manageable. Revenue for CVS’s health services segment, which houses its Caremark pharmacy benefit manager, rose 10.2%, due to a more favorable drug mix and plan renewals from existing clients, the company said. Revenue for the retail-pharmacy and drug-infusion business increased by 12.5% during the second quarter, which Joyner said was aided by increases in prescription volumes filled. CVS reported an adjusted quarterly profit of $1.81 per share, above the average analyst estimate of $1.46 per share, according to LSEG data. Mizuho updates U.S. top picks: Adds CVS Health, PayPal and Oracle The list now highlights 24 stocks across six sectors, reflecting what Mizuho calls “our analysts’ most favored and some of their most differentiated ideas.” In a note to clients, Mizuho said the Top Picks list is not intended as a portfolio, but rather a collection of individual analysts’ “#1 Outperform-rated names” based on a 12-month outlook. The list is updated monthly and includes comparisons between Mizuho’s forecasts and consensus estimates to assess conviction. CVS Health was added due to what Mizuho sees as roughly $3.00 in “embedded EPS power,” driven largely by expected margin recovery in the company’s health insurance segment. “While the company struggled in 2024 due to elevated utilization... we feel confident in CVS’s embedded earnings power if it executes its recovery plans,” the firm wrote. Mizuho also cited confidence in CVS’s integrated healthcare strategy and improving margins. PayPal was highlighted for its potential to accelerate branded checkout volume growth. Mizuho expects total payment volume growth to reach 8-10% in the coming years, helped by “the rollout of the new checkout experience,” Buy Now, Pay Later integration, and increasing momentum for Pay with Venmo. “Management feels it is only beginning to scratch the surface of the flywheel,” analysts said. Oracle earned a spot as Mizuho sees the company as a “double-digit growth company.” The firm pointed to Oracle’s $104 billion FY29 revenue target and strength in cloud infrastructure. “Many investors continue to under-appreciate the attractiveness of Oracle’s OCI offering,” Mizuho wrote, noting it is about “33% cheaper than AWS for basic compute services.”

CVS Health raises annual profit forecast as turnaround gathers steam (Reuters) -CVS Health raised its full-year profit forecast on Thursday following strong performance across its businesses, signaling that the healthcare conglomerate was on a path to recovery after a series of challenges last year. Shares of the company jumped 8.5% to $72.35 in premarket trading after CVS raised its 2025 adjusted profit forecast to $6 to $6.20 per share from $5.75 to $6 previously. The shares fell over 40% last year due to weak performance in the company’s insurance and pharmacy businesses and multiple cuts to its profit outlook, but have pared most of those losses this year following a better-than-expected earnings report in February. CEO David Joyner, who took the helm in October, has laid out cost-cutting plans and reshuffled the top management to help the company navigate one of the most challenging periods in its six-decade history. CVS Health (NYSE:CVS) on Thursday reported its first-quarter adjusted profit above estimates, helped by lower-than-expected medical costs, a likely relief for investors after industry bellwether UnitedHealth (NYSE:UNH) cut its forecast last month, citing elevated costs. Revenue from CVS’ pharmacy unit of $31.91 billion beat estimates of $30.96 billion. Its health services unit brought in revenue of $43.46 billion, also above estimates of $43.30 billion. "Overall, this will be viewed as a strong start to 2025, providing confidence that the management team has a good grasp on all of CVS’s many underlying businesses," said Evercore ISI analyst Elizabeth Anderson. CVS said it would exit the individual exchange business, where it sells plans directly to individuals through Obamacare exchanges -- its latest effort to streamline operations. Separately, its pharmacy benefit management unit plans to drop Eli Lilly (NYSE:LLY)’s weight-loss drug Zepbound as a preferred product from its reimbursement list from July 1, and retain rival Wegovy, in a win for the Novo Nordisk (NYSE:NVO) drug. Health insurers have been facing increased medical costs for the past two years, driven by high healthcare demand among older adults enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans. However, CVS’ medical loss ratio, or the percent of premiums spent on patient care, fell to 87.3% in the first quarter ended March 31 from 90.4% a year ago, below analysts’ expectations of 88.9%, according to estimates compiled by LSEG. The company earned $2.25 per share, compared with analysts’ average estimate of $1.70.
