Today 38 Dakota were hung in Mankato, Minnesota by President Abraham Lincoln. This is the largest public execution in U.S. history. After starvation & broken treaties, the Dakota demanded justice against the U.S. They were killed for it. #Dakota38

On this date in 1862 in Mankato, MN the execution of 38 Dakota Indians occurred. The #Dakota38 were executed after resisting imposed starvation by the US Government. A week after the hangings President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

A final straw that led to rebellion by starving Dakota was Andrew Myrick, a trader at the Lower Sioux Agency who said, "As far as I am concerned, if they [the Dakota] are hungry let them eat grass or their own dung."
He was later found dead with grass stuffed in his racist mouth. #Dakota38
