Artificial diamonds have been a story since the early 2000s (I have the bookmarks!); the #Botswana deal should’ve been sealed under a sovereign wealth fund akin to #Norway’s North Sea oil deal.

#Botswana would be LAUGHING today, but only they will be able to explain why they deferred to #DeBeers 🤦🏾‍♂️

Diamond production drops 5% in second quarter Chamwe Kaira  Diamond production in Namibia dropped by 5% in the second quarter of 2025, falling to 535,000 carats from 561,000 carats in the first quarter.  According to De Beers’ second quarter production report, the decline followed planned actions to reduce output at Debmarine Namibia. In total, Namibia produced 1,166,000 carats in the first half of 2025, down from 1,194,000 carats during the same period in 2024. De Beers said that after a fleet optimisation study, the Coral Sea vessel was retired, and the Grand Banks vessel was taken out of service, awaiting a decision on possible decommissioning or sale.  “This was partially offset by planned mining of higher-grade areas at Namdeb,” the report stated. De Beers operates in Namibia through joint ventures with the government, including Namdeb land operations, Debmarine Namibia, and the Namibia Diamond Trading Company. The report showed that production in Botswana fell by 44% to 2.7 million carats. The decrease was due to extended maintenance at Orapa and reduced output, which included putting the Letlhakane Tailings Treatment Plant on care and maintenance. Jwaneng production remained steady. In South Africa, output rose by 17% to 0.6 million carats. This increase came from processing higher-grade underground ore at the Venetia underground project. However, the volume remains lower than previous open-pit operations, and capital spending has been delayed amid weak market conditions. Production in Canada dropped by 46% to 400,000 carats, driven by planned treatment of lower-grade ore. Rough diamond trading remained difficult in the first half of 2025. De Beers said improved industry sentiment at the end of the first quarter helped stabilise polished diamond prices. But uncertainty around US tariffs announced in April slowed polished trading. Despite these issues, consumer demand for diamond jewellery remained broadly stable. De Beers has kept its 2025 production guidance unchanged at between 20 and 23 million carats.  “De Beers continues to monitor rough diamond trading conditions and will respond accordingly,” the report noted. The company also confirmed that the formal process for its sale is progressing despite the current market environment.

De Beers contribution to Namibia’s economy drops Chamwe Kaira Anglo American, through its subsidiary De Beers, revealed in its 2024 tax and economic contribution report that its total tax and economic contribution in Namibia amounted to US$545 million (N$10.2 billion), a decrease from US$611 million (N$11.4 billion) in 2023. Taxes and royalties borne in Namibia amounted to US$63 million, compared to US$144 million the previous year. Total taxes and royalties borne and collected reached US$136 million, lower than US$234 million in 2023. De Beers operates in Namibia through a 50:50 partnership with the government. It recovers land-based diamonds through Namdeb and offshore diamonds through Debmarine Namibia. The group employed 1,600 people in 2024. Wages and related payments for the year were US$89 million, a slight increase from US$85 million in 2023. Community and social investments totalled US$3 million. Total procurement stood at US$317 million, up from US$287 million in 2023. Of this, US$155 million was local procurement, down from US$162 million the previous year. Namibia has the richest known marine diamond deposits in the world. Diamond resources are estimated at 75 million carats. De Beers produced 2.2 million carats of diamonds in Namibia in 2024, a 4% decrease from 2.3 million carats in 2023. This was due to a 13% decline in output from Debmarine Namibia, partly balanced by higher-grade mining and better recoveries at Namdeb. De Beers’ global rough diamond production fell by 22% to 24.7 million carats, down from 31.9 million carats in 2023. The group said the drop was a planned response to lower demand and high inventory levels in the midstream. In Botswana, production declined by 27% to 17.9 million carats from 24.7 million in 2023, due to planned reductions at Jwaneng. South Africa’s production rose by 8% to 2.2 million carats, up from 2.0 million in 2023. This followed progress at the Venetia underground mine and slightly better ore grades. Production in Canada dropped by 16% to 2.4 million carats from 2.8 million in 2023. The fall was due to planned processing of lower-grade ore. Anglo American owns 85% of De Beers, while the government of Botswana holds the remaining 15%. De Beers and its partners produce about one-third of the world’s rough diamonds in terms of value. Anglo American is preparing to separate De Beers from its group, either through a divestment or demerger. The aim is to give both entities more strategic flexibility. The group defines total tax and economic contribution as the combined value of taxes and royalties, wages, procurement, and community investment in each country.

De Beers commits to renewable energy De Beers Group is strengthening its commitment to sustainability through key developments in renewable energy, aligned with its Building Forever programme. The company has entered into new partnerships aimed at expanding clean energy use across its operations. Namdeb recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with NamPower to scale up its current 34 MW wind energy project. Early assessments suggest the project could expand to between 100 100MW and 150 MW, connecting to the NamPower grid. In Botswana, Debswana has partnered with Botswana Power Corporation to support renewable energy integration. In South Africa, Envusa Energy has commissioned renewable energy projects that will supply Venetia Mine from 2026. At the recent JCK Las Vegas Show, De Beers unveiled new downstream initiatives aimed at promoting natural diamonds. The Ombré Desert Diamonds collection serves as one of these initiatives, drawing inspiration from the desert landscapes that host numerous diamond mines. The new design joins previous De Beers “beacon” products such as the eternity ring and three-stone ring. These beacons aim to create emotional connections with consumers and drive demand for natural diamond jewellery. De Beers also launched Origin, De Beers Group, a branded polished diamond line. Origin allows retailers to share the individual stories of diamonds sourced from De Beers with digital tools that offer customers access to provenance information and brand storytelling. Origin enhances consumer confidence by providing diamonds with verified ethical sourcing. In upstream activities, De Beers reported the completion of airborne geophysical surveys in Angola, marking a milestone in its exploration work. In the midstream segment, the group reiterated its focus on traceability. De Beers announced that its Element Six Oregon Centre would produce technology diamonds for the first time. This milestone is part of a US$130 million investment in its Portland facility. The synthetic diamonds produced are intended for industrial applications. Chief Executive Officer Al Cook said, “One year on from announcing our Origins strategy, we have made fast and meaningful progress in delivering our vision. We have met every target that we announced back in 2024. Every part of De Beers is evolving to create lasting value, benefitting shareholders, the industry and consumers.” De Beers Group is the world’s largest diamond producer by value, with mining operations in Botswana, Canada, Namibia, and South Africa.

Botswana’s diamond giant slashes output as demand falls WEDAELI CHIBELUSHI and WILL ROSS Botswana main diamond company has paused production at some of its mines, citing a prolonged downturn in global demand. Debswana, a joint venture between the government and global mining giant De Beers, saw its sales revenue drop by almost 50% last year. Botswana is the world’s largest producer of diamonds by value. The industry accounts for a quarter of the country’s total annual income (gross domestic product), according to the International Monetary Fund. On Friday, Debswana said production this year is being scaled back to 15 million carats – approximately a 40% decrease from its output in 2023. The company, which accounts for around 90% of Botswana’s diamond sales expects this reduced output will lead to “significant cost savings” across areas like fuel and electricity. In a statement, Debswana said it continued to “prudently navigate the challenging market conditions” citing low demand and “emerging pressures such as US-imposed tariffs”. The global market for mined diamonds has been experiencing a decline since 2023, partly due to the availability of lab-grown alternatives. In response to this downturn, Debswana paused production at its flagship Jwaneng mine, as well as its Orapa mines, last month. Each mine will be closed for three months in total. The southern African country has for decades been trying to shift its economy away from being dependent on diamond sales, to varying degrees of success. Although successive governments have boosted sectors such as tourism, finance and the mining of minerals such as copper, diamond sales still make up three-quarters of Botswana’s foreign exchange earnings. This income is likely to be hit by Debswana’s decision to temporarily close its mines. The company has stressed that no involuntary job cuts are planned, although it continues to offer voluntary redundancy. As a result of the sustained downturn in the global diamond industry, Botswana will cut its 2025 economic growth forecast to almost zero, a senior finance official was quoted as saying by the Reuters news agency. – BBC The post Botswana’s diamond giant slashes output as demand falls appeared first on The Namibian.
