Pay for the loss of property, including enslaved people, or face invasion. The price One hundred and fifty million francs. Today, that's over twenty billion dollars. This was the first and only time in history a formerly enslaved nation had to pay reparations to it's former colonizer. It wasn't freedom, It was extortion and Haiti had no allies. The US refused to recognize Haiti until eighteen sixty two. Why ? Because their revolution made slaveholders nervous, Because if Haiti could rise, so could every black person. So still in chains, and the system knew it. To pay the debt, Haiti borrowed money from French banks with high interest. They paid for over a century money that could have built schools, hospitals, roads gone generations born into debt. They didn't choose, forced to sacrifice what their ancestors already died for. Instead, it enriched French elites and left Haiti in permanent poverty. The last payment wasn't made until nineteen forty seven. That's one hundred and twenty two years of paying for freedom They already earned in blood. No repayment, no apology, no justice. Follow.
