US Drought Monitor class change map comparing conditions from April 7 to March 31. Parts of the Midwest and Texas saw one- and two-category improvements this week. The Southern Plains and Northeast also saw some areas of improvement.  

Drought worsened through parts of the West, with some improvement in Montana and Colorado. Parts of the Southeast also saw degradation.  

The High Plains and Hawaii saw mixed conditions.

USDM Hot Topic April 2, 2026: Florida. Florida is completely in abnormal dryness or drought for the 12th week in a row. This week, all drought categories increased: moderate drought or worse, 99.8% to 99.51%; severe drought or worse, 90.71% to 95.03%; extreme drought or worse, 72.89% to 79.5%; and exceptional drought, 9.5% to 12.24%.

USDM Hot Topic April 2, 2026: Florida. Florida is completely in abnormal dryness or drought for the 12th week in a row. This week, all drought categories increased: moderate drought or worse, 99.8% to 99.51%; severe drought or worse, 90.71% to 95.03%; extreme drought or worse, 72.89% to 79.5%; and exceptional drought, 9.5% to 12.24%. Despite some rain in southern Florida this past week, aquifers, rivers and lakes continue to decline in the state. Southwest Florida has been in a water shortage, with additional restrictions set to take effect on April 3. Wildfires have also been a concern.

Description from CMOR user: “Southeastern Utah is experiencing the driest spring conditions I have seen in this area. The snowpack this year was dismal, barely reaching more than 50% SWE for the basins. The SNOTEL sites are already reading zero SWE at multiple sites across the region. When normally this time of year they are at the peak.”

USDM Hot Topic March 26, 2026: Colorado. This week, abnormal dryness or drought increased from 85.71% to 91.03% of Colorado. Moderate drought or worse rose from 69.45% to 74.28%. Severe drought expanded from 40.36% to 58.99%. Extreme drought increased from 12.88% to 23.97%. Exceptional drought increased from 0.83% to 5.87%.

Severe drought expanded from 40.99% to 66.81%. Extreme drought increased from 8.45% to 14.05%. The Drought Severity and Coverage Index rose from 235 to 269 of 500.

Dry and windy conditions have worsened destructive wildfires in western #Nebraska this week. Four wildfires have burned about 1,300 square miles, and the #MorrillFire is the worst in the state’s history. As of March 19, the Morrill Fire is 67% contained.
