The master drummer Idris Muhammad (Leo Morris) was born in New Orleans 11/13/1939. His career spanned R&B hits to house band at the Apollo to the Broadway musical Hair to funky boogaloo to probing modern jazz to jazz fusion to Black Masking Indian grooves.

Drummer Ed Blackwell was born 10/10/1929 in New Orleans. He was steeped in the city’s street beats from second line parades to Black Masking Indian grooves. Drawn to bebop, he pioneered free jazz drumming w Ornette Coleman. Randy Weston: “Everything he played was danceable.”
