[for B.]
by Dick Whyte

indelible-like that plate of chopped fruit
forgotten in our excitement, knocked off
the dresser & onto the floor—
a reminder

futures are not known but anticipated
antecedents—animals rushing to the
waterhole, each making room for
the other—

exhausted & satisfied-the way dirt
is satisfied by rain as it turns to mud
& later dries out in the sun—
emboldened

            Anterior Axioms:

awake as air awakes: ambitiously absent

       ants arriving—also aspirations

at an ancient alter? always avoid answers

an axe as well, achieving absolution

all abstractions are attempts at abdication

       abracadabra! ask & ask & ask &

"into air—the scent of a violet sings!"

                        I.

immortal the flower's stem:
an umbilical of petals ontologically

arrested

                        II.

make no mistake,
you can't pry open the head of an ocean
without imagining our annihilation

Up late writing - love that moment when a few lines of a poem snap into focus & you know that all you have to do is sit around with the words long enough & more will come. Gosh I love poetry! 🖤🖤🖤 (if you're also up late writing - feel free to share something in the comments)

"In a garden of words, prefer the weeds"
[. . . cloth and bone . . . nor strewn . . .]

the stones cry the river into being
two shadows : one they call god
sky that has teeth : keep whistling
sower of stars : curved is your needle
great builder of horizons : listen!
water and air: we were both once
the dirt speaks: moon, then sun, then blood
the water bowl empty of wishes
when there were no words : there were

	Quatrain

Three funny bunnies had some money
    And bought some purple cupcakes;
They put them in their hungry tummies
    Washed down with runny milkshakes.

I had the pleasure of teaching my partner's almost-four year old daughter about rhyming today, and we wrote this together. She's real keen to write more as well. So adorable. 💕
