Van Aert moest solo in de achtervolging en kwam terug tot op 10 seconden, maar de op papier betere tijdrijder moest uiteindelijk toch ook het hoofd buigen voor Mathieu van der Poel.
Van Aert finishte als derde op ruim anderhalve minuut en werd nog ingehaald door Jasper Philipsen.
