This advertisement from the Limerick Chronicle (29 Dec 1887) announces the opening of the Turkish baths , together with plunge baths, slipper baths and a variety of douches. Turkish baths cost 2/- or 1/- according to the time of day. Slipper baths and showers were available for women, but Turkish baths for women weren't added till 1889.
Plan showing location of the Turkish baths, with the Spillane Tobacco Factory adjacent on its right, and a photograph showing the baths (just over the bridge on the left) and the factory to its right and behind.
The British Army blocking the end of Sarsfield Bridge during the Limerick Soviet of April 1919. Just over half the frontage of the Turkish baths can be seen behind the tank. Soldiers were billeted in the Turkish baths.
A somewhat confusing detail from Charles E Goad's fire insurance plan of Sarsfield Street, dated March 1897. For a better description of the baths see https://www.victorianturkishbath.org/_6DIRECTORY/AtoZEstab/Ireland/LimSars/LimSarsEng.htm
#OnThisDay, 22 Dec 1887, David Taylor opened #TurkishBaths at 15 Sarsfield St, #Limerick, #Ireland. Closed c.1927 with building bought by adjacent Spillane. During the #EasterRising Sarsfield Bridge was barricaded & troops billeted in the baths. www.victorianturkishbath.org/_6DIRECTORY/... 🗃️ #C19th
