Of course on my drive to my hotel I spot a "never forget the Edmund Fitzgerald" bumper sticker. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a good photo. #EdmundFitzgerald #edmundfitzgeraldposting #GordonLightfoot #PureMichigan

The SS Edmund Fitzgerald #### by Christina S & Zach W > **_“We are holding our own”_** > > Last message sent by the _Edmund Fitzgerald_ to the nearby freighter _Arthur M. Anderson_ It is said by many that the Witch of November sank the SS _Edmund Fitzgerald_ 50 years ago on November 10, 1975 with all 29 hands lost, but the actual cause of the sinking is a mystery to this day. The vessel was a mega workhorse of Lake Superior that carried iron ore across Lake Superior. After it vanished under the waves, no bodies were ever recovered and they say that is because the witch never gives up her dead. Why does this particular sinking linger in our collective memories when there have been countless ships over the centuries on the Great Lakes that have meet a similar fate? The 1976 “ _The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald_ ” by **Gordon Lightfoot** certainly has played a role in keeping the story alive. He became a friend to many of the lost crewmen’s families over the years, and was honored by the Mariner’s Church of Detroit when its rang 30 times—29 for the _Edmund Fitzgerald’s_ lost crew and another for Gordon Lightfoot when he died in 2023. But it is more than that. I think the _Edmund Fitzgerald_ still resonates with us because the crew members were everyday men doing a hard job when they vanished without a trace. The SS _Edmund Fitzgerald_ was launched in 1958 and was the largest ship on the Great Lakes, and is still the largest to have sunk there. It was a behemoth workhorse that successfully carried iron ore for 17 years across Lake Superior. Her final voyage saw her leave from Superior, Wisconsin, near Duluth en route to a steel mill near Detroit, Michigan. The ship and it’s companion vessel that day, the _SS Arthur M Anderson_ , were hit unexpectedly by a November Witch, a unique atmospheric occurrence on the great lakes. A Witch is caused by intense low atmospheric pressure over the Great Lakes that pulls cold arctic air from the north or northwest and warm gulf air from the south. This will cause hurricane force winds and mammoth waves where the two systems meet. While the _SS Arthur M. Anderson_ made it safely through that day, the _SS Edmund Fitzgerald_ slipped beneath the water taking all hands with her. The ship broke into two large pieces, but it is unknown if that happened on the surface, causing the sinking, or if it broke below the waves. The crew ranged from aged 20 to 63 and all of them were remembered as hard working men, many of them with long standing ties to the Great Lakes. They were family many who left behind many broken hearts. Because of the oxygen-poor nature of the deep frigid fresh water where the ship sank most, if not all, of the bodies are still preserved inside the wreck, which has been dedicated as an official burial site not to be disturbed or exploited. ### Share this: * Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * Share on Tumblr * * Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window) WhatsApp * Click to share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Click to share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * More * * Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * Click to print (Opens in new window) Print * Like Loading... ### _Related_
