After my pilgrimage to Finch West last week, it was time to discover Eglinton West through Line 5 LRT on a beautiful Saturday

-It’s very fast underground
-Stations are very deep (and cold!)
-Spacing of stops seems adequate

Waiting 10min for the next […]

First column Sunday!

Crosstown Bits and Bites chronicles my visits to each of the 25 stops on Toronto’s newly opened Crosstown transit line.
We have a great city to explore.

Until last week, #EglintonCrosstown vehicles were limited to 55 km/h in the tunnels, and 30 km/h in underground stations.

Station speeds have also increased to 45 km/h!

Far more than a terminal, it’s a sprawling mobility hub linking Line 5, a major bus terminal, and both GO and UP Express services, all anchored by the historic former Kodak building. #ttc #metrolinx #eglintoncrosstown (2/3)

This artwork beautifully captures the station's character by channeling the nostalgic energy of vintage fairground posters and transit signage. #eglintoncrosstown #ttc #metrolinx (3/3)

While it is set to become a vital hub with the upcoming Barrie GO interchange, the true soul of the station is Janice Kerbel’s ‘Ride of Your Life’ installation. #ttc #metrolinx #eglintoncrosstown (2/3)

Caledonia station is my top pick for Line 5 because it is an architectural gem, balancing massive concrete depth with natural light that reaches the tracks. #EglintonCrosstown #TTC #Metrolinx (1/3)

The journey skips Caledonia to save it for a future spotlight and largely bypasses Cedarvale, as that station was already captured during its soft opening. #TTC #Metrolinx #EglintonCrosstown (3/3)

This specific stretch highlights the line’s signature modular design, which is defined by sleek steel finishes and an abundance of natural light. #TTC #Metrolinx #EglintonCrosstown (2/3)

Exploring the "glass box" architecture of the Eglinton Crosstown involves navigating a random assortment of stations between Avenue and Keelesdale. #TTC #Metrolinx #EglintonCrosstown (1/3)

It also subtly plays with our perception of space, making the interchange feel just a bit bigger. #TTC #Metrolinx #EglintonCrosstown (3/3)

The poorly named Eglinton Station (really should’ve been Eglinton–Yonge or even Midtown) is a tight squeeze for what’s now one of the TTC’s busiest interchanges. #TTC #Metrolinx #EglintonCrosstown (1/3)

" #Toronto finally opened the #EglintonCrosstown LRT (Line 5) after 15 years of construction. The city has a poor history with street-level trams, so did this $13G line meet people's expectations? "

Laird, Leaside, and Mount Pleasant (featured here) aren’t interchange stations, so under Metrolinx’s methodology they don’t receive artwork—hopefully local BIAs can help change that over time. #EglintonCrosstown (3/3)

The stations are clean, efficient, and share a common design language but could use a splash of personality. #EglintonCrosstown (2/3)

From the Brentcliffe Portal (east of Laird) to Mount Dennis—and eventually YYZ—the line is fully grade-separated and effectively functions as a subway, which is impressive. #EglintonCrosstown (1/3)

This stretch still needs work — likely one station removed, real transit priority, and restricting motor vehicles from crossing the tracks at a few key intersections like Leslie. Tall order. We’ll see. #EglintonCrosstown (3/3)

We decided to take the new Eglinton Crosstown LRT to get home from the performance on the weekend. We were on it only from Eglinton to Mount Dennis, so all underground and fast. It was decent at that hour. 👍

Line 5 thoughts... (For opening day/ soft launch)
- Wayyy better than line 6
- Once it gets full TSP (hopefully in May) it's golden
- Speakers on the Irvs are very tinny
- The stations are very nice (albeit a bit chilly)
