© Werner Mahler: S-Bahn Berlin #01, 1990, aus der Serie S-Bahn Berlin, Archivalischer Pigment-Print

Ute and Werner Mahler’s colour works have only been shown very rarely. Although Ludwig Schirmer was one of the most important advertising photographers in the former East Germany, he has been lesser known up to this point; he too has primarily shown black-and-white works.

This unique ‘family exhibition’ presents Schirmer’s works from 1958 to 2000, which are characterized by their closeness to people, precise compositions, and subtle humour.

Werner Mahler experimented with various techniques for the landscape photographs he took between 2000 and 2005 and created evocative and surprising images.

From 1998 to 2008, Ute Mahler sought out places where great personalities lived and worked to make a series about these people’s lives. In the work Spurensuche, the photographer creates a new narrative thread by combining the actual sites with her own subjective and intuitive images as well as early-1990s fashion photographs. Ute Mahler’s poetic images probe the boundaries of the photographic genre.

Haus am Kleistpark Projektraum | Marta Djourina »Glowing Attraction«, installation view, 2025, photo by © Andreas Meichsner

The photo artist Marta Djourina (*1991, Bulgaria) focuses on natural light phenomena and makes them visible to us. Djourina deliberately refrains from using a camera and instead examines the effects of a wide variety of light sources on photographic paper. With her analog practice, the artist sets a counterpoint to contemporary digital forms of work and returns to the origins of the photographic medium. In this solo exhibition, light is not just a creative element, but becomes the object of investigation, a tool and the subject of Djourina’s work.

Nikita Teryoshin looks behind the scenes of the global defense business with his series “Nothing Personal”. Through his perspective, we experience the “back office of war” as an oversized playground for adults with wine, finger food and shiny weapons. Here, dead bodies are mannequins or pixels on the screens and the events of war are staged in front of high-ranking guests, heads of state, generals and merchants. The images, taken at international arms fairs around the world (2016–2024), point to the specific actors without making them individually visible. “Nothing Personal” tells of the disturbingly impersonal business of war, often sold as “engineering a better tomorrow”.
