Poster showing examples of restraint and exclusion rooms with a red x over the photos, and examples of alternatives that allow students co-regulation and coping with stress, with a green checkmark over the photos. Washington State House Bill 1795, SHB 1795,
Bans certain dangerous restraint and clarifies limits;
Strengthens existing protections;
Stops new isolation rooms from being built; and
Allows calming spaces that support co-regulation.

The cost of restraint and isolation For students includes Injuries; lost learning; derailed skill development; complex PTSD; and suicidality.

For educators: Injuries; dissatisfaction with the job; compromised mental health; compromised teaching, stressful work environment.

For school districts: High costs associated with increased liability, insurance rates, and workers compensation; high staff turnover; widening opportunity gaps.

To regulate, children need safe relationships, safe environment, and support to build skills or process trauma. You don't get that if you are locked up alone, anxious, and scared. Isolating kids pushes them into escalating cycles of more restraint & isolation.

Let's do this - take the next step and pass SBH 1795. This bill bans certain dangerous restraint and clarifies limits; strengthens existing protections; stops new isolation rooms from being built; allows calming spaces that support co-regulation.
There is no fiscal note - these are policy changes only.

This is not an acceptable practice. Seclusion is abuse. No child should be shut in a box. endseclusion.info/3YIBF5q #EndSeclusion

We must state this clearly: Seclusion is a form of institutional violence. It is not therapeutic. It is not trauma-informed. It does not teach self-regulation; it teaches shame and fear. endseclusion.org/2025/12/19... #EndSeclusion
