Energy Lives! organises its annual Infrastructural Citizen Week these days!
When we hear the word ‘energy transition’ we usually think of the future, yet energy transitions have happened throughout history and have histories that continue to shape our present times.

Energy Lives! organises its second Infrastructrual Citizen Week from 23 to 29 March parallel in Aarhus, Gothenburg and Stavanger!
This year’s events focus on memories and lived experiences of past energy transitions.

Woman in front of screen
We’re launching the year’s #envhum research talks with a presentation by our very own @melinabuns.bsky.social on «Thinking Through Energy Transitions with the Ranstad Uranium Mine», building on the #energylives project.

I have written some reflections on the #energylives fieldwork week we had in Finland in October, for The Current, our project blog. www.uis.no/en/the-curre... #envhist #envhum #energy
Exhausted & energized after four days of fieldwork with the excellent #energylives team in Finland. What does it mean to be neighbors with oil refineries, nuclear power plants, and shipping harbors in Porvoo, Loviisa, and Naantali? Blog post coming to The Current, stay tuned
Old wooden sauna, blackened wall
Time for Finnish smoke sauna. I’m about to be very cold and very hot, back and forth, for a few hours. What a way to start a week of #energylives fieldwork!
Oh! This looks very useful for the #energylives project, we definitely need to get together to read and discuss this text. Thanks for writing it!

Huge steel pipes on one half, the other half is a reflection in mirror strips on a wall.
We took a really nice sensory walk around the Belval campus today, on a gorgeous fall day. Thanks to all who came! #shot2025 #energylives
We have two sessions organized by the #energylives project today. First, from 11:35-12:50 in room 3.230, «Energy (In)Justices: Social and Cultural Perspectives on the Use(rs) of Heating Technologies», with papers from Bengt Sandin, Damiana Salm, Bue Poulsgaard et al, and Odinn Melsted. #shot2025
Person on screen, talking. «Sensing Changed is the most important of Joy’s books to me»
That’s me. Talking about how Joy has influenced me as a historian. And how that this really led to our current #energylives project. I don’t think it’s wrong to think of the project as a tribute to Joy.
Poster with enlarged postal stamp motive of industrial facility, steelworks. Quite sublime for those of us who are into that sort of thing (I am!)
Stamp art in my hotel. Looking forward to exploring the Belval campus tomorrow - once Luxembourg’s largest steelworks, now a university campus. Our #energylives session will make use of the site, sending people out on sensory energy walks.

in May, Energy Lives! organised its first workshop exploring how to study senses, emotions and energy.

The #shot2025 program is finally out! I’m looking forward to the conference, as it’s been years since I went to SHOT (Milan 2019!). We have two sessions from the #energylives project here, I’m organizing the nontraditional one on sensory energy walks. #histtech

Such a great few days talking about emotion, sensation, and energy with all the brilliant people on the #energylives project at Chalmers, Gothenburg. The hydrogen dome definitely wins the prize for coolest workshop venue yet.

Just a fancy building at night, three round corner balconies
On my way home after three fantastic days in Gothenburg with the #energylives project team and invited guests, exploring the meeting of energy history and sensory & emotional history. The weather was great and the people even better!

'For us, then, energy was synonymous with work; an association we were to challenge on this walk.’
Our third and final blog post about the ICW features Bue Juul Poulsgaard’s reflections on transitions between spaces and systems.

At the end of March, the Energy Lives! project ran Infrastructural Citizen Week 2025!
Over the next couple of weeks, the project blog The Current will feature a series of posts that reflect on the different walks.

District heating is a key case in the Energy Lives! project, so it’s interesting to read this theguardian.com piece. We had district heating from a waste incineration plant in our house in Northern Sweden, heated floors in the winter. Energy transitions do not have to be uncomfortable. #energylives
Energy Lives! will organise the next Infrastructural Citizen Week in 2026.
Until then, keep yourself updated about news, events, and conference attendances of Energy Lives! members on our website and our blog The Current.

5 – We’ve reached the end of Infrastructural Citizen Week 2025. Over the past days we invited citizens to reflect on and explore how we can sense energy and energy transitions, what emotions are evoked when being close to energy infrastructures.

4 - We live with energy, we live through energy, and energy lives with us. Energy shapes our lives either in subtle or in dramatic ways. And yet, for some this energy is of greater personal proximity than to others.

3 - low on energy after a two hour walk with a fantastic group of people who were brave enough and open to explore how we can sense the energy that surrounds us and to think about how energies, technologies, and bodies are connected.

2 - In our society, the visual sense usually dominates all the others. And with the eye, it is not difficult to spot energy or energy infrastructure. When I spent time in Bristol in 2023, I became obsessed with the city’s fuse poles and would document a different one each day.

It is Infrastructural Citizen Week!
In 2025, 2026, and 2027, the Energy Lives! project will organise the ICW in Aarhus, Gothenburg, and Stavanger to facilitate exchange and communication between local communities and project researchers.
