Fine mezzotint image of the French Enlightenment scientist Émilie du Châtelet. She is seen facing the front, looking out through a window, with a globe visible in the back, with a partially hidden library and two books resting in front of her on a sill. The mezzotint engraving is rich and velvety in colour. It was engraved by Johann Haid of Augsburg, after the famous painting by Jean Marc Nattier - one of the most fashionable portrait artists of the day.
