From the archives of my high desert shoot with Chelsea.
Quite a memorable day and an honor to create with this talented and wonderful model.
Loaded with my Hasselblad 503cx, Carl Zeiss 80mm Planar T* a few rolls of 120 film, my Nikon D200, 12-24mm, 50mm and 24-85mm we used two locations that day and she braved both with the given weather conditions like a true champ.
Anyone who has worked with Chelsea knows what a sweetheart and professional she is, she knows her lighting and camera angles and that goes a long way in my book.
I just wished I could have worked with her more often because in my experience, familiarity over time lends to greater ideas and work, but then there are times for instance looking back at the image files of this shoot where things click right out the gate, and that is instantly rewarding and something every photographer/model strives for.
I am eternally grateful for her time and talent and friendship that day.

Go give her your time at her page if you can and tell her Art sent you.

Magic moments in the deep woods of the Oregon Coast. It's enough to make me believe in faeries!

I am reminded that the all we need for magic is a little corner without adults and a pocketful of whimsy. Maybe a few feet of fabric.

I don't know about anyone else but I've had to really puzzle at the balance between work and play. For 30 years I've had a mildly-successful production company and I really love my job. Starting as a punk rock club kid I promoted myself (no-one else seemingly willing to do it) to move up from sound at the club to being hired by bands to promoting and recording bands and finally to starting my own sound company, which then became a full-service production company. Over the years I have had a lot of satisfaction running this thing. I get a lot of positive reinforcement from clients, it keeps me out and about and being social, I get to work with wonderful people who are talented and inspiring. But that all-consuming passion for the job often leaves me shortchanging myself on other things. Yes, as it turns out, there is more to life than just a great job.
I had played in bands and to this day I still hear songs in my head when left alone too long. But I mostly gave up music because I wanted to succeed at the job and didn't want to try to divide my time between two things. I was probably correct in that decision. When photography presented itself to me in 2015 I was in a good position to step away from day-to-day worries and focus on exploring this new thing. Post-pandemic it's harder to do and now that we throw in a lot of economic and political uncertainty, I find it daunting. I absolutely LOVE the little community and exploration of the world that I've found here and recognize its benefit to myself in having a creative outlet.

It just seems like there are some big hurdles roaring down the pike and art suddenly seems like a luxury item.

This winter has been tough, creatively. There's the whole "demise of America" thing but there's also the balancing act of work and play that weighs on me. More in the alt-text.

Photography aspires to art but I remain unconvinced, in the sense of a purist. I do believe it is a craft. Now this is not to belittle the push of the button. Far from it! To get to THIS moment, I took multiple scouting trips and spent days painstakingly jotting mile-by-mile notes up and down river systems. Plotted circles of timing from where we'd stay and laid out schedules of when and where we'd reprovision and what to do if a group of birdwatchers showed up unexpectedly. Not to mention the months and months I've spent trying to figure out how to use this technological wonder I intend to hold in my hands. Not shown is the stop where I simply could not manage to find a way to frame in an interesting way what my eyes could clearly see, not even close. The camera strips away emotion and connection and relationships and history and leaves you with whatever story you can imply in the arch of a back or wiggle of hips. It has made me realize how emotional my eyes are and how much we color what we see with our own experiences. Looking at this I see the first time my tall Hungarian girlfriend stripped naked on a roof overlooking Powell's and asked me to take her picture. I see warm days and the smell of water on the rocks and laughter around a campfire. And I see all the shoots that came before as I scramble over SUV-sized boulders to find an angle that clicks into place in my mind as I peer through the little viewfinder. Click.

One thing I've come to learn about myself is that I am a purist. Oh, I am fine with starting a band that blends classical reindeer herder chants with Flatbush hip-hop and Texas metal or writing Santa-core sci-fi. But we blur the line between "art" and (shudder) "content" at our own peril. I adore this image and think that the effort expended in its creation is worthy of respect. More, I have mad appreciation for what goes into Eva and Lucy being themselves to BE and BE HERE for our crafts to collide here in this shot.

Then I wonder if the painter feels the same. Do they stare into the brush stroke and wonder that it can convey different emotions as they angle their wrist to guide the brush? I wonder.

Over the holiday season I spent a lot of time plucking bits and pieces from the archive and reviewing my progress, both technically and artistically. More technical than artistic, if only because the factors that go into the latter are the sum total of my life experiences to date and those haven't changed SO much. But they have changed.

I started out with absolutely no knowledge of photography. No history, no Instagram, no particular blueprint. I probably thought I was inventing boudoir. I definitely thought I was a bold and brilliant innovator for using noir-ish shadows. LOL. How quickly I was disabused!

Instagram actually served as a fantastic tutor, curated for me by a number of models who showed me around their favorite photographers and work. They had massive impact on my conception of where nude art fit into the world and I give a lot of credit to them for shaping my thinking. Falling in with this crowd put me on course to dive into the "environmental nude" or "nude in nature", which dove-tailed perfectly with my existing love of road trips and campfire cooking.

The real challenge in this isn't taking a good picture, it's taking a picture that implies something about the person taking it. The photographer is invisible yet is present as the window through which the viewer sees the scene, shaping or warping it. Like peering into deep space with rough instruments, we infer their presence by the way they change the light that reaches us.

That's some lofty stuff and I chuckle at it a bit but it's true. And as I look at my work the past two or three years I can see shifts in the spectrum that reflect changes in my thinking and the way I use these instruments.

This shoot always reminds me that even with frequent collaborators things don't always work. We nabbed a warm summer-y afternoon to try my go-to waterfall canyon and I should revisit all that because at the moment it didn't seem to work but I bet if I go back now there will be things to pluck or rethink how to edit. We pulled into this little wayside and found ourselves alone in the meadow -- the next 45 minutes yielded several of my favorite images with Hailey ever. And then we stopped by a third site and puzzled around for a bit before Hailey saw a patch of light and hopped into it and we reeled off 15 minutes of the best work we had ever done. I've re-approached it multiple times with different edit styles and loved it each time. One of those things that are on my list for the upcoming year to decide on and toss into the world. Sometimes it's tough to share these because they feel TOO personal. Maybe I'm possessive of the moment or even that it feels as though I were included in a private emotion. But it's not true. We made all of this to see it and exclaim that we did it and share it and put it out into the world.

Boom.

Let's kick this year into gear. As far as conventional images are concerned, this might be my favorite shot ever. Hailey balanced a bit precariously, as if ready to lift off into the unknown. #moments #pdxphotographer #environmentalnude #photoshoot #summervibe #playful

Best. Hair. Ever. It was a trademark and a tool. Still is although the owner is now deep into a different life phase. This one was good while it lasted. Always my favorite interpreter of environments.

I happened to spot someone who had shot a music video in this old barn as they wondered what sort of huge bird had built a nest in the loft. I laughed. I kept it to myself. Let 'em wonder.

@Lucyartmodel finding a perfect perch on a foggy Oregon morning. This is from summer of 2023, I believe. Just out of sight of the camera, two drift-boat fishermen were mesmerized by the sudden appearance of sirens ashore and I imagine them returning frequently on foggy summer mornings in hopes of seeing the strange apparitions again.

Time to rouse myself and get things done today. Off into the pouring skies and grey featureless world.
