Does anyone else see the deep link between D'Ambrosio and Vygotsky? If thought is mediated activity, then culture can only be 'decoded' through its own tools and signs—a core principle of Ethnomathematics. #Ethnomathematics #Vygotsky #Constructivism #Epistemology #D'Ambrosio
Images of six impactful Black mathematicians for Black History Month
For #BlackHistoryMonth, I introduced my students to (clockwise from upper left) Benjamin Banneker, Euphemia Haynes, Ernest Wilkins, Katherine Johnson, Gladys West, and John Urschel, all of whom are truly inspiring! #ITeachMath #MathEd #ethnomathematics #MultiverseOfMathness
#Ethnomathematics: For #Diwali (late Oct./early Nov.), I explain the holiday, show a short video of a rangoli artist at work, and show a few examples. I ask students to color a rangoli-ish pattern, notice how they feel, and consider why symmetry has a calming effect. #ITeachMath #MathEd #MathSky
Cool Site 2: Mathigon.org/Timeline from the British maths org! This interactive timeline shows the epic, global sweep of mathematical discovery, development, and influencers through 22,000 years of human history. #MultiverseOfMathness #MathEd #ITeachMath #MathSky #ethnomathematics
This painting, "Ad Astra Per Astra," depicts Cherokee mathematician and engineer Mary Golda Ross. It hangs in the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
Google honored Mary Golda Ross with one of its famed Google Doodles on the 110th anniversary of her birth in 2018.
In 2019, the U.S. Mint issued new Sacajawea dollar coins that honored Mary Golda Ross on the reverse side.
November is #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth, and today I introduced my students to #MaryGoldaRoss (1908-2008) of the #Cherokee Nation! Here's the Smithsonian's article about her: airandspace.si.edu/stories/edit...

This image shows a portion of the interactive Mathigon.org/Timeline of 22,000 years of mathematical history, displaying many noted mathematicians and math discoveries. This portion of the timeline shows not only classically well-known mathematicians like Bernhard Riemann and George Boole, but also other hugely impactful ones like Florence Nightingale, Alan Turing, Ada Lovelace, Katherine Johnson, and Srinivasa Ramanujan.
