#GAUA 11 – We’re leaving Gaua. The D’Entrecasteaux, which had remained offshore because it could not anchor, is now manoeuvring off the coast. The sea is rough, and we will have to climb back on board by pilot ladder.

#GAUA 10- At the French-language Santa Maria School, one of whose buildings was constructed by the European Union, we also bring school supplies, copies of "The Little Prince" in Bichlamar, and a box of books donated by the D’Entrecasteaux.

#GAUA 9 – Wherever we arrive, we are greeted with a “salu salu”: children or women lined up to place flower garlands around our necks. It is a simple gesture, warm yet solemn, that marks our entry into the community before the speeches begin.

#GAUA 8 – Along the road, flying foxes sleep high in the treetops. Hanging upside down, they doze through the day before taking flight at night. As fruit-eaters, they also help sustain and renew the forest.

#GAUA 7 – Visit to the school in Losalava, where we are delivering school supplies and copies of "The Little Prince" in Bislama. The provincial president, the area administrator, and traditional leaders continue to accompany us.

#GAUA 6 – In the thicket near Namasari lie three Japanese graves. One belongs to Dai Nagamine, a native of Okinawa who died in 1937; another to a man from Kumamoto who died in 1932. Elders also say that the nearby anchor came from a Japanese ship that sank here.

#GAUA 5 – In Namasari, we were welcomed by the traditional and administrative authorities. As always, the speeches were an opportunity to explain what France is already doing in Torba, and what more it could do on the basis of needs expressed locally.

#GAUA 11- Nous quittons Gaua. Resté au large faute de pouvoir mouiller, le D’Entrecasteaux est en mouvement. La mer est agitée, et nous allons devoir remonter à bord par l’échelle de coupée.

#GAUA 10- À l’école francophone Santa Maria, dont un bâtiment a été construit par l’Union européenne 🇪🇺, nous apportons aussi des fournitures scolaires, des exemplaires du Petit Prince en bichelamar et un carton de livres donné par le D’Entrecasteaux.

#GAUA 9- À chaque arrivée quelque part, le "salu salu" : des enfants ou des femmes alignés nous accueillent avec des colliers de fleurs passés autour du cou. Un geste simple, chaleureux et solennel à la fois, qui marque l’entrée dans la communauté avant les prises de parole.

#GAUA 8- Sur la route, des roussettes dorment à la cime des grands arbres. Suspendues tête en bas, elles somnolent en plein jour avant de s’envoler la nuit. Frugivores, elles contribuent aussi à faire vivre et régénérer la forêt.

#GAUA 6- Dans les broussailles près de Namasari, trois tombes japonaises. L’une est celle de Dai Nagamine, originaire d’Okinawa, mort en 1937 ; une autre, d’un homme de Kumamoto, mort en 1932. Les anciens disent aussi que l’ancre serait celle d’un bateau japonais coulé.

#GAUA 2 – Once ashore, we are welcomed by the president of Torba Province. The provincial headquarters is in Sola, on Vanua Lava, where the secretary general is based, but the president lives on his home island, Gaua. He will stay with us throughout the day.

#GAUA 1 – Gaua is the last island on our mission. The sea is too rough to launch the Zodiac from the stern, as it could be swept under the hull. So we go down by the side ladder instead. There are still school supplies to deliver to the schools.

#GAUA 1- Gaua est la dernière île de notre mission. La mer est trop agitée pour mettre le zodiac à l’eau par l’arrière : il risquerait de passer sous la coque. On utilise donc l’échelle de côté. Il reste des fournitures scolaires à remettre aux écoles.
