Corinne Le Quéré on the #GlobalCarbonBudget ⬇️
“Progress is still much too fragile to translate into the sustained decreases in global emissions needed to tackle #ClimateChange. The emerging impacts of climate change on the carbon sinks is worrying and stresses further the need for urgent action.”

Reasons for urgency but also notes of hope in the #GlobalCarbonBudget, with "35 countries that have reduced their fossil carbon emissions over the past decade, while still growing their economy"🌏

Global energy demand continues to increase despite progress in many countries. The #GlobalCarbonBudget forecasts a 0.8% increase in coal, 1% in oil, and +1.3% for gas use. Weakened natural carbon sinks now account for 8% of atmospheric CO2 rise since 1960.

Global fossil fuel CO2 emissions are projected to rise by 1.1% in 2025, reaching a record 38.1 billion tonnes. The remaining #CarbonBudget for limiting warming to 1.5 degrees C (170 billion tonnes of CO2) could be used up before 2030.

🏭 Not only are the use and emissions of coal, oil and natural gas increasing, but natural carbon sinks (forests, soils and oceans) are becoming less effective due to their progressive degradation as a result of human activity.

📈 2025 marks a new record for CO₂ emissions from fossil fuels.
🌡️ Just 10 years after the Paris Agreement, it has become unfeasible to achieve the goal of limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Looking for good news in the #GlobalCarbonBudget?
For me this is one. Oil emissions from China may have peaked and the total emission growth in China is small (0.2%, uncertainty estimates include negative).
As China is responsible for about a third of global fossil CO₂ emissions, this is big news.
